Sample sessions
Following are recaps of three sessions presented today.
Transforming Care at the Bedside: Before and after—A nurse’s job satisfaction can affect his or her ability to administer care. When a Transforming Care at the Bedside program was inaugurated in a critical-care unit in a Bangkok, Thailand hospital, research was conducted to analyze its impact on satisfaction of staff nurses and the nursing error rate. The result? Significant increase in job satisfaction for the nurses, significant decrease in the nursing error rate, and redesigned ICU nursing care that fosters team collaboration and gives the care manager more time to spend with patients and families. Nitorn Washirasawass, RN, presented the study, titled “Effects of Transforming Care at the Bedside program on job satisfaction of staff nurses and nursing error rate at critical-care unit of Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital.”
Patient satisfaction as a guide to policy—Patient satisfaction is of significant importance to health care systems. Consumers often choose a hospital based on patient satisfaction data, and administrators use the information as a quality indicator. Betty Riner, MSN, of St. Joseph/Candler Health System, and two colleagues conducted interviews of patients and nurses in a community hospital; findings showed the groups had similar perceptions of excellent nursing care. Based on the study, the hospital introduced policy changes to increase patient satisfaction, including helping patients distinguish between nurses and ancillary staff members. Co-researchers were Susan Brooks Howell, MSN, EdD, RN, of St. Joseph’s/Candler, and Helen M. Taggart, DSN, RN, ACNS-BC, professor and interim head of the nursing department at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
On getting published when English is your second language—The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International co-publishes two of the profession’s most respected journals—Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing. Board members from both publications presented attendees of this special session, “Publishing for Writers with English as a Second Language,” with strategies for getting published. Susan Gennaro, RN, DSN, FAAN, editor of Journal of Nursing Scholarship, organized the session, which was moderated by Kajal Khodamoradi, MS.
Inaugural induction, Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame
After another round of informative sessions, three of which are highlighted above, attendees gathered to witness and celebrate the induction of the first group of nurse scientists into the honor society’s newly created Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. In announcing the program in a December 2009 article published in RNL, Patricia Thompson, CEO of Sigma Theta Tau International, observed, “Establishing the Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame demonstrates the honor society’s commitment to the importance of nursing research.” Evidence of that commitment was further demonstrated by the impressive achievements of the first cohort of inductees.
In February of this year, President Karen Morin observed: “STTI’s research congress is the most appropriate venue for this recognition. STTI is a pioneer in funding and disseminating nursing research and, for more than 20 years, STTI’s research congress has attracted hundreds of nurse leaders representing more than three dozen countries.” The induction ceremony was sponsored by Wiley-Blackwell, co-publisher of STTI’s peer-reviewed journals, Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing. See below for photos of the ceremony and the reception that followed.
