The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) has been approved as an associated nongovernmental organization (NGO) by the United Nations’ Department of Public Information. This association demonstrates STTI’s commitment to the charter of the United Nations, which seeks to achieve international cooperation toward solving humanitarian and health issues.

Through this affiliation, STTI will continue to conduct outreach around the world to help its nurse members better understand the work and aims of the United Nations, including achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. These goals, which include improving maternal and child health and combating HIV/AIDS, lay the foundation for improving world health.

“Sigma Theta Tau was formed on the basis of a commitment to improving global health, and the United Nations very much echoes this sentiment. Our members can anticipate seeing and hearing more about the goals of the U.N.,” says STTI President Karen H. Morin, RN, DSN, ANEF. “We will work hard to make our members aware of the fantastic resources the United Nations offers.”

With this designation, STTI receives three United Nations ground passes that allow selected STTI representatives to access U.N. facilities and to attend open meetings and NGO briefings. RNL
